President who presided, among other things, over the young republic’s greatest single geographic expansion. ”1 In his quest to build a regional public academy in central Virginia, Jefferson would play a seminal role in shaping the American campus as we know it today. He called it the “academical village,” implying an intimacy of scale that would nurture the exchange of ideas between professors and students. Still, he relentlessly pressed for his school to attain the status of a great university during the nine years (1817–1826) that he was involved in its construction.
Olmsted’s notions of social reform were already imbued in his masterful design for New York’s Central Park in 1858, with the 14 | American Places theme of nature as a healthy, civilizing force for the common man. The theme was repeated in his designs for parks, public grounds, and communities throughout the United States. Even before he established his career as a self-educated landscape architect, Olmsted had written extensively about the need for civil institutions and outlooks appropriate for the still-formative republic.
Ramée’s plan employed the now-common idiom of a three-sided central space open to the countryside but with bold refinements that could only have come from classic French and English notions of spatial organization. The campus was laid out in a broad U-shaped courtyard with a domed structure (originally 10 | American Places conceived as a chapel) occupying the center of the semicircle at the apex of the space. The academic buildings framing the space were connected by arcades. At the ends of the U were two residential college halls for students and college personnel.
