Preparing teachers to learn from their teaching throughout their careers should start at the beginning of teacher training so that a set of tools are acquired that develop the skills and practices of systematic, purposeful critical inquiry (Darling-Hammond & Friedlander 2008). It is imperative that educators become lifelong learners who are constantly evolving to provide the best possible education to every student. That is the essence of the action research process. It is logical that action research in teacher preparation programs will continue to grow as it has proven to have a positive effect on teaching skills, as well as a personal effect in impacting teacher dispositions.

Dewey wrote extensively about the process of reflection and action, by introducing his readers to the relationship between experience and learning. Dewey stressed that experience leads to learning and learning informs the way we approach new experiences. What Dewey could not have foreseen is the way in which experiential leaning has become the focus of teacher education under the term action research. Although the term action research had not been coined, Dewey would certainly recognize and applaud the contemporary educators’ application of this form of experiential learning in pursuit of pedagogical excellence.
